Maserati North America announced a recall for the Ghibli and the Quattroporte, sold in the United States.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem seems to be that the driver’s side floor mat could become dislodged on the affected cars. This could cause the mat to get stuck on the accelerator pedal and cause unintended acceleration hazard, thus increasing the risk of crash, serious injury or even death.

“The driver-side floor mat anchor may break allowing the floor mat to move and get trapped between the accelerator pedal and the vehicle carpet”, wrote the NHTSA in its Summary of the problem.

The affected Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte are from the 2014-2016. Maserati will replace the driver-side floor mat and possibly the accelerator pedal cover too.  All fixes will be performed free of charge to owners. The recall is expected to begin on April 29, 2016.

The new safety campaign, which affects 28,235 units, follows the one from October, when 984 examples of the 2014 Quattroporte GTS V8 sedans were recalled for possible fire risks.
