You might recall one of the craziest “drag races” in history where the team at Top Gear put Richard Hammond behind the wheel of a Bugatti Veyron where he went head-to-head with a Euro Fighter. Well, as absurd as the concept of putting a car in a race with a fighter jet seems, Top Gear has, 12 years later, done it again. This time, they have put the 3-seater McLaren Speedtail up against the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.
Despite the Speedtail having an insane price tag of over R40million, Paddy McGuinness refers to it as “chicken feed” in comparison to the R2billion RAF fighter jet.
Top Gear has certainly used the correct car for this race as the Speedtail is McLaren’s fastest road car produced. This hybrid McLaren has 1,036 bhp and a dry weight of only 1,430kg which allows it to do a staggering 0-300 km/h sprint in a mere 12.8 seconds. It is shocking to think a car with such incredible performance is capable of wearing a number plate.
Oh, did we forget to mention that the McLaren Speedtail has a top speed of 403 km/h? That may seem crazy, but not as crazy as the Royal Air Forces’ F-35 fighter jets’ top speed of 1931 km/h.
Despite the seemingly unfair race, it most certainly is an interesting one to watch.
